This past weekend we went hiking up in Hatcher Pass to Reed Lake, a true, glacier-fed alpine lake. The day was cool, and the scenery in the Talkeetna Mountains was just breath-taking. Our path took us through a valley, then up into the mountains, over boulder fields, up streams and finally to the green waters of the lake. The Fall colors were starting, and the fireweed was bright red.
We had to leave the dog behind this time, as she balked at crossing the boulder field twice before. It was just as well, as the trail got worse after that, and she probably wouldn’t have made it. The hike took us about 5 hours and went up to just over 3500 feet.
Next weekend is a last fishing trip to the Kenai River. The salmon runs are over, but there’s still a lot of large Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden waiting to be caught (I hope!!)
