July 17   Day 23

Well, we got up at 5 and got on the road just after 6, and made it around the “Going-to-the-sun Road”, the road through Glacier NP.  The traffic was very light, which was good, as the road was very steep and extremely narrow with no guard rails and drops of hundreds of feet off the side.  It would have been difficult if not impossible to do it with a lot of oncoming traffic.

As for the sights, their reputation is well deserved.  It’s the most beautiful spot I’ve been in since my last trip to Alaska.  The photos will never do it justice.  Besides the scenery, we also saw a mother mountain goat and her kid and a flock of bighorn sheep, both almost within touching distance.

We left the lower 48 just before noon and entered Alberta.  We were back in the prairies for a while, but could see the Canadian Rockies off to our west.  We passed through Calgary and headed into the Rockies.  Very Impressive!  Tonight we’re staying in a resort in Banff.  Tough to take, huh?--Wally

Hi, Everyone

Well, it was tough getting up at 5 am to get on the road early but well worth it. We avoided a lot of potential “traffic jams” that may have occurred around the rock overhangs. Glacier National Park is another fabulous site on our journey to the Far North. We were very high in the mountains with very winding, narrow roads and a few tunnels. There were waterfalls that plunged down mountains. It took us about 3 hours to complete the drive through Glacier NP. Near the end of the drive is upper St. Mary’s Lake—bright blue in color from glacial activity. Further down the road was lower St. Mary’s Lake—darker blue in color.  The mother and baby goat were precious and we got many photos—got carried away.

We crossed the Canadian border around 10 am and Wally continued driving until after lunch when I took over. I drove the remainder of the trip into Banff. For those of you who remember my trip from Maine to Alaska 2 years ago, this area holds a special place in my heart. It is just as thrilling to see the area a second time. The place we are staying at in Banff is very nice. Our room doesn’t face the more spectacular view, but, as you can see there is an impressive mountain not too far from the camper!

My head is spinning from viewing the American and Canadian Rockies in the same day. It’s also spinning from crossing the Continental Divide numerous times—I think we are on the Atlantic side now.

Keep in touch!  Love,  Cecelia
