Day 1 June 25
Well, the big day is finally here. After one minor false start, Cecelia and I,
and Aurora, are on our way. Of course, we
picked the hottest day of the year to have the movers come yesterday, and
today, our first on the road, is even hotter.
96 by mid-afternoon. Tomorrow is
supposed to be just as hot, which means I left in the middle of Maine’s
first official heat wave. I knew it was
time to head further north!! It was very
strange to see my house of almost 17 years absolutely empty, and even stranger
to shut the door for the last time without the key in my pocket!!
The minor false start came when I realized there was one
last thing to go to Alaska with
the movers, so we had to backtrack into Waterville
to drop it off. While the movers were
packing up the house, Cecelia and I were getting the camper ready to go,
including the roof-top carrier we bought for extra storage space. I used the step ladder to make it easier, and
late in the afternoon, after the movers had left, I was still using it. That’s when I realized it was supposed to be
on the moving truck to Alaska!
We’ve come across another summer phenomena that I’m sure
will be commonplace, road construction.
We’ve gone through 5 construction sites by mid-afternoon.
Tonight we’ll stay at my cousin’s house in Moretown,
Vermont, then head out to Syracuse
in the morning to see Melissa. Not sure
exactly where we’ll be headed after that, but I’m sure we’ll figure something
out! Thanks to all our friends for the
great send-off. I will try to up-date
this web page every couple of days, as internet access allows.
