Square Pit, Topsham Maine

Part of the Brunswick Pegmatite.  Our best experience here is finding optically clear and smokey quartz (massive) and deep red garnets.  It is hard to find whole garnets but the when you do, they are worth the effort.  This location requires a long hike to reach, probably 45 minutes and the initial climb is steep.  You really should be in good shape for this hike.

Minerals observed:  Albite, Almandine (Garnets), Beryl (Aquamarine, Heliodor), Biotite, Microcline, Molybdenite, Muscovite, Quartz (Clear, Milky, Smokey), Schorl

The first three pictures show the hike in (click on them to enlarge the picture)

The start of the hike is rather daunting, looking up hill from the Cathance RoadAfter cresting the hill, the view down the power lines makes this a good spot to catch your breathAfter you leave the power lines, it's a nice walk through the woods for another 15 minutes

Here is a picture of the quarry

That's an 8 inch chisel next to the biotite

Checked through the dumps on the north side and found much more in the way of gemmy quartz and gemmy smokey quartz, no crystals.

Spent the day screening garnets and came home with about 25 nice blood red specimens.
